Former Gay Basher Wants Understanding?
Last week another gay bashing Republican came out of the closet and now is asking for understanding.
Ken Mehlman, the ex-Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman, President Bush's campaign manager in 2004, is asking America and the gay and progressive community for understanding. He says he wants to become an advocate for gay marriage.
According to a Salon report, Mr Mehlman acknowledges that if he had publicly declared his sexuality sooner, he might have played a role in keeping the Republican party from pushing an anti-gay agenda. "Mr. Mehlman says that he understands those ...who can't offer him ... support now that he has come to terms with his gayness. He admits that even as chairman of the Republican National Committee, he was just following orders when the Republican right launched attacks on the civil rights of gay people, attempting to turn them into pariahs who were not worthy of being American citizens."
Will Mehlman be like Saul, a persecutor before he found enlightenment, and became Paul, and a saint? Who knows! As the Internet wags say: The Republican Party sure can use a few saints, they have enough demons.
