Says Gingrich's a "Political Opportunist," Went "Too Far" on the Mosque Issue
Conservative commentator and Republican pol Pat Buchanan hit the nail on the head, when he said that GOP leader Newt Gingrich is as a "political opportunist" who is using the so-called "Ground Zero mosque" issue to position himself to the right of Sarah Palin for a run at the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 GOP primaries.
Gingrich, who is pandering to bigots, accused President Obama of "pandering to radical Islam" by expressing support for the right of Muslims to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque two blocks from the site of the Ground Zero. The Newt-ster went on, deep into crazy land, to compare American Muslims to Nazis, and to the Japanese who attack us at Pearl Harbor, to begin of America's involvement in World War 2. The Newt-ster said, "Nazis don't have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust Museum in Washington. We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor. There's no reason for us to accept a mosque next to the World Trade Center."
Mr. Buchanan said that Gingrich is "trying to get out and be more flamboyant and more charismatic, if you will, and more controversial than Sarah Palin, who is his primary challenger, if he gets into Iowa and New Hampshire." In so many words, Gingrich is trying to out kook Palin for the yahoo vote. He has not only matched her for craziness on the issue, he has upped the craziness.
Gingrich seems not to give a flying fist about what this kookiness does to America. Gingrich has stroked up the hate against American Muslims to what could prove to be dangerous levels. It is a good thing to see a conservative exposing this radical, racist nuttiness for just what it is, and explaining why Gingrich and Palin have stooped into the gutter with their bigotry.
